Care Guide

Recommended use:

Our High Low rugs are most suitable for low to medium traffic areas.

General:

Regular vacuuming (for hand tufted rugs no less than once per week) is essential to maintaining the condition of the rug, eliminating shed fibers, and deterring moths. But overly high suction or some beater bars can damage your rug over time. We advise turning off the beater bar function when vacuuming rugs.
If you have access to a suitable outdoor area you may first wish to bring outside and shake or beat thoroughly to remove loose dirt or debris.

We recommend using a rug pad with all our rugs.

None of our rugs are pretreated with any chemicals or stain deterrents, however we have found Scotch Guard to be useful in maintaining the condition of our personal rugs. If you decide to go this route we strongly recommend that you test it on a small area before applying to the entire rug.

Rugs left in direct sunlight will fade over time.

Cleaning your Rug:

Vacuum first to remove any debris

Spills: lightly blot (never rub) with a damp cloth or paper towel. For heavy spills, spoon up excess liquid before blotting with a clean, dry towel.

Stains: spot clean with water and a mild detergent or a water/vinegar mixture - we also recommend Folex - then blot dry. Do not use too much water, or allow the rug to remain wet. But please be sure to test  any cleaning agent on a small section of your rug first, as different soaps and cleaning products can react in different ways with the various yarn colors.

Smelly stains: treat as above, but add vinegar to your water/detergent mix.

Debris: scrape the rug surface with a blunt knife.

Heavy cleaning: please consult with a professional rug cleaner.

A Note to Pet Owners:

While this style rug is our most durable and easy to maintain, our one caveat is for pet owners - the loops may prove irresistible for scratching, and once pulled, cannot be mended (though they can be trimmed).

SHOP MOTIF RUGS

Recommended use:

Our Bamboo Silk rug styles are most suitable for low to medium traffic areas.

General:

Bamboo is a natural viscose and rugs made from bamboo silk yarn have a soft and cool hand feel. While it has a reputation for being a delicate fiber easily damaged by water or crushed by furniture, vigorous cleaning, or foot traffic, we have also found them to be quite durable. Depending on your preference, you may or may not mind them being a little lived-in, especially as their subtle iridescence tends to conceal imperfections.

While we still consider these most suitable for low traffic areas, we love them and the subdued glamour they add to our home.

Due to the nature of how these are tufted there may be small marks from the tufting process on the bamboo silk rugs.

Rugs left in direct sunlight will fade over time, this is especially true of the bamboo silk rugs.

Cleaning your Rug:

Dirt and debris can be removed by shaking off or sweeping with a gentle broom. Vacuums can be used as well but never with a beater bar and only on lower settings.

If you have access to a suitable outdoor area you may first wish to bring outside and shake to remove loose dirt or debris.

To Clean: Make a mild solution using water and shampoo (not detergent). Do not use a cloth to clean; rather, use your hand to lightly blot. Only ever scrub or rub with your hand, always only in the direction of the pile. You can dry inside; if allowing your rug to dry outside never place in direct sunlight.

For serious stains or deep cleaning please consult with a professional rug cleaner.

Last Resort: these rugs are truly reversible. If one side gets hopelessly soiled you get a second chance with the other side!

Treat Curled Rug Corners:

Whether in your home, office or any other space, foot traffic may cause your woven rug’s edges to curl. Should this happen, simply dampen the curled area and weigh it down evenly overnight. The worse the curl, the more times you can repeat this process. To further prevent curled edges, you can also use an adhesive product like Curl Stop at the corners, but we do not recommend rug tape as an alternative to rug page, which are essential to keeping your hemp rug from sliding.

SHOP FLAT WEAVE RUGS

Recommended use:

Our Hemp rug styles are most suitable for medium to high traffic areas.

General:

Regular vacuuming is the best way to care for your hemp rug. Visible, loose dirt should be vacuumed but never use a beater bar with your hemp rug as it may cause damage or loosening of the weave over time. Vacuum your rug from different directions, passing over the area several times. Although the need may not be visible, regular vacuuming will increase your hemp rug’s life by preventing soil build-up. It will also help eliminate stains caused by spills or soil buildup.

We recommend using a rug pad with all our rugs, but especially our woven styles. A rug pad will help keep your rug safe and securely in place, and also straighten out any wrinkles from your rug’s previous life stages like storage and shipment.

If your rug feels dry or brittle:

Over time and especially in dryer climate or months, your hemp rug may show signs of drying. If this happens,, apply a light mist of water to the surface using a spray bottle or a damp brush or towel. Make sure your hemp rug is vacuumed before applying any amount of moisture, since dirt in the matting might stain if it gets wet. This light misting can help eliminate minor bubbling and looseness, as it’s normal for carpet to tighten up slightly if the fibers become dry. But make sure not to saturate your rug, as this may cause warping or staining.

SHOP HEMP RUGS

Recommended use:

Our Organic Cotton woven rug styles are most suitable for medium to high traffic areas.

General:

Machine washable for any size that can comfortably fit in your washer. Do not fold or squish. Machine wash individually on cold/delicate cycle with a gentle detergent and hang to dry. Ok to tumble dry without heat but we prefer hanging.

Larger sizes may not be able to fit in your washing machine, and for these (or any size) it is perfectly acceptable to maintain using a vacuum cleaner and spot cleaning when necessary with a gentle detergent mixed with water.

In these cases, regular vacuuming is essential to maintaining the condition of the rug, eliminating stray fibers, and deterring moths. But overly high suction or some beater bars can damage your rug over time. We advise turning off the beater bar function when vacuuming rugs.
