Beau Travail Part II
Our latest collection is based on the hypnotic Claire Denis film, Beau Travail. Adapted for the screen from a Herman Melville novella, Billy Budd, the film’s plot is set amongst French Foreign Legionnaires stationed in a faded colonial outpost in the eastern African country Djibouti. Denis chronicles the recalled experience of an individual and in the process uses the ever present tension between memory and the current moment to explore larger themes of repression and freedom that play out in various ways throughout the film.
