Summer is a Feeling

Summer is a Feeling is a collection of 4 flat weave rugs conceived in the dead of winter for release in the cool New York springtime. Inspired by surf culture, designed by two people who have never stood upright on a board, these rugs are a reminder to enjoy, preserve, and, if possible, prolong the things we love.

Our original inspiration for this collection was the premise of a film Endless Summer by Bruce Brown. We saw this movie over a decade ago and fell in love with the concept and the tagline “With enough time and enough money, you could spend the rest of your life following the summer around the world”. It was an outrageous, irresistible fantasy to a broke young couple working odd jobs while trying to get a small company off the ground. 

We didn’t revisit Endless Summer until hours after we released the rug collection. Doing so, we realized our carelessness, as we listened in shame to Brown’s casually racist narration. From there we read about the exclusionary past of surfing, perpetuated in part by Brown’s film. 

We still love the beach, and the summer and the possibility of extending and experiencing it to its fullest. But we don’t want to live in Bruce Brown’s Endless Summer. And while we still don’t know whether we will ever surf ourselves, we did learn about some wonderful non profits that are making surfing more accessible to underrepresented youths. We celebrate our new collection with a donation to Black Surfing Association, Black Girls Surf, and Laru Beya Collective to help give these kids, if not a never ending summer, at least a memorable one.
