Interiors: 1974
We designed the Interiors: 1974 collection over the last months of 2016. The world had become increasingly disheartening, and it was getting cold out. We stayed in more than usual, and immersed ourselves in old films, especially those of Werner Rainer Fassbinder. His sense of melodrama, decadence and outrage appealed to us, as did the garishly beautiful colors and often claustrophobic interiors and close ups.
In a continuation of rug dioramas we made for our previous collection The Passenger, we constructed another set of dioramas for Interiors: 1974. But rather than attempting to create the illusion of a larger world, we focused on building small, focused environments for each rug. Each diorama was shot inside our own apartment, so that even the few that hint at a large outdoor space are still enclosed in a small New York flat.
