The actual translation of her name and how she is depicted varies over the centuries and the different cultures which honor her, but most often the Goddess of Mercy is one who hears the suffering of everyone and feels compassion for everything. In the film Ponyo, she is the mother of a tiny fish who falls in love with a tiny boy.
